KELVIN

Kelvin, William Thomson (Belfast 1824 - Netherhall 1907), mathematician and British physicist, one between the more important investigators of its time. After the studies to the university of Glasgow and Cambridge, divenne university professor to the university of Glasgow (1846) where he conserved the chair until 1899. In the field of the thermodynamics, it perfected the job completed from James Prescott Joule on the existing relationship between heat and mechanical energy and in 1852 collaborated in the study of the famous phenomenon like effect of Joule-Thomson cooling. It deepened the temperature concept and in 1848 it introduced the absolute scale of the temperature that door still its name. One was interested also of electricity and compě searches that found a practical application in the submarine telegraphy: it brought some improvements in the fabrication of cables and devised dispositi and apparatuses to you that it yielded important acknowledgments publics. Not convinced of the electromagnetic theory of Maxwell, new mathematical formulation of the propagation of the light in elastic means tried one. In collaboration with Helmholtz, it gave an esteem of the age of the Earth based on its progressive cooling and tried one mathematical determination of the age of the Sun and the energy irradiated to its surface. It invented a device in order to preview the tides, an analyzer of wave and an apparatus in order to collect the sounds in deep waters; it redesigned also the marine compass.
